Teacher Appreciation Day

On Tuesday, May 9, several parents planned a special day for our teachers.  The Parent Booster Club provided a breakfast for the teachers before school, and had several fun surprises throughout the day.

Parents Nancy Durang, Nancy Ferreira, Ana Meehan, Tara Remy, along with members of our school board, provided a breakfast buffet with egg casserole, bagels, fresh fruit and a “Box O’ Joe.”  Mr. Chris Davis came to school to help supervise students before school, to allow all the teachers to enjoy the breakfast together.

Later on, the teachers were given carnations by each of their students.   Fresh coffee and cookies were delivered in the afternoon, along with memo pads, a pen, and a package of popcorn and bowls to enjoy later!

Thank you to all the parents who helped to make this a special day of thoughtful acts, and surprises for our teachers!

On Tuesday, May 23, Harvey Uniforms will be coming to BCS for a uniform fitting day.  We are sending home forms for you next week.  If you wish to come for the measuring, please come between 10:00 and 11:00 AM.  Any orders placed before June 1 will be shipped at no charge this summer!

Please Help…

In today’s folder, you will find a letter to all parents, asking for help in our grant process.   We have been trying to access additional funding to help better serve our student base.  In so doing, we have found that many grants and programs are tied into income guidelines that align with the Qualifications for Free and Reduced Lunches.

To help apply for the grants, and to qualify for additional funding, we are asking all families to fill out the enclosed survey.  Please rest assured that your information will remain confidential, and will help us in the grant writing and approval process.  To help in this process, we are providing you with an envelope labeled, “To the Attention of - Mrs. Karen I. Hodges – Personal and Confidential.”

What do we hope to accomplish?  We would like to help reduce the cost of lunches for our students.  At this point, our lunches cost $3.50 per day.  We may be able to reduce the cost of the lunches if our school qualifies.  Secondly, we may be able to offer additional reading support through Title I in the future.  Thirdly, many of the grants that we have been reviewing require some categorizing of income level.

Presently, we participate in several grants through the NO Child Left Behind Act, and Brockton Public Schools.  Title IID has helped us make strides in the area of technology – through the acquisition of “In Focus” digital projector, our computer server, and a digital camera.  Title II A funding has given our teachers training in technology, classroom and teaching techniques, writing seminars, and this summer, will help send three teachers to a two week course in science.  Title V funding has helped purchase textbooks for our school.

It is our hope that we can secure additional funding to help give our teachers additional resources, and to continue to give your children an education that will meet their needs – and help them strive towards excellence.

If you have any questions about this survey or the grant process, please contact Mrs. Hodges through the school office.  Thank you.

BCS Arts and Music Festival

Set aside the evening of Monday, May 22, for a time of celebration, praise, and worship!  Each May, the students of BCS present an evening of fine arts – band, vocal music, art projects, and this year – dance!

Our band will play highlights of techniques learned throughout the year.  Mr. John Smith will be directing our band, interspersed with solos and small groups.

Mrs. Sharon Lunsford has worked with all our students to help them prepare to lead in worship – along with praise music and rap.  All of our students will take part in this program.

This year, Ms. Shantael Clewis has taught an after school class in liturgical dance to students in grades 3 – 8.  It is amazing to see what they have learned in the past two months.

Traditionally, our Arts and Music Festival is one of the highlights of our year.  Bring your family and friends!

This year, our Parent Booster Club will also host a BookFair after the program.  More information will be coming home next week.

A New Computer Lab!

We are excited about the addition of a new computer lab in our building!   Mrs. Cheri Oliver is the coordinator of the ESOL program through the extended ministry of Trinity Baptist Church.  Mrs. Oliver, through a grant program, has set up a computer lab that will be used as an English learning center in the evenings.  BCS is able to access the lab during the school day.  Already, our junior high students have used the lab for math and science activities.  We are purchasing copies of “Mavis Beacon Teaches Microsoft Office,” to help teach our older students word processing, spreadsheets, and PowerPoint.  (Microsoft Office is available in the classrooms on the wing as well!)  The dress down day on May 18 will help fund this project.  We are planning to incorporate computer classes in our upper grades in the fall.  Keep tuned for further information!
