I-Safe Information

i-SAFE Inc. is partnering with educators around the country to provide a prevention oriented Internet safety education program for students in grades K-12. We are excited to announce that we have partnered with i-SAFE, Inc. to bring Internet Safety education to Brockton Christian School.

i-SAFE Inc. is a government funded non-profit foundation whose mission is to educate and empower youth with the ability to take control of their Internet experience by giving them vital knowledge that will enable them to recognize and avoid dangerous, destructive, or unlawful online behavior and to respond appropriately.

The integrated teaching and learning activities are age appropriate and vary from grade to grade. The core topics discussed in the i-SAFE curriculum include:

Cyber Community Citizenship: Compares the cyber community to the physical community with a focus on cyber citizenship and safety rules.
Cyber Security: Understanding computer security, e-mail, viruses, flaming, spyware, etc;
Personal Safety: Recognizing online communication dangers; e-mail and text messaging safety, revealing personal information online.
Intellectual Property: Understanding legal and ethical behaviors related to information and technology; such as downloading music/movies, plagiarism, etc.
Cyber Bullying: Focuses on online etiquette and identifying and responding to cyber harassment and threats.
Predator Identification: Strategies to recognize suspicious online communication, the grooming process and proactive techniques to reduce risk.

The lesson topics in grades K-4 are presented by i-SAFE's character "i-Buddy." Each lesson provides young students with exposure to Internet concepts and vocabulary through engaging hands-on activities. Activities for grades 5-8 involve discussions and participatory activities to foster discussion, cooperative learning, concept development, and opportunities for school and community outreach. Lesson plans for grades 5-8 also include service learning projects and activities. Students in grades 6-8 are also encouraged to become i-SAFE Student Mentors and participate in community and school based events and activities aimed at increasing Internet safety awareness.

We believe that this curriculum is necessary to protect and empower our students and hope that you can offer your support to this program by continuing the discussion of these topics at home. This school year, we will be introducing the curriculum to grades 6-8, and will continue with other grades in the coming years. Should you have any additional questions, please contact Mrs. Hodges through the school office.

For more information about i-SAFE visit the website at www.isafe.org.

Health Update

We have had a number of sick children at school lately, and have been informed of cases of strep, scarlet fever, and various viruses.

Please be aware that in a community of children, we must do everything we can to keep our staff and students healthy. If your child exhibits the following symptoms, please keep them at home until the symptoms have subsided for at least 24 hours:

• vomiting
• diarrhea
• fever over 99 degrees
• severe coughing
• any suspicious rash

Thank you for helping us keep a healthy school!

Spring Pictures

Spring Pictures were sent home last week. Please note that these are PREVIEW packages, and must be paid for if you decide to keep them. Otherwise, please return the entire package or the portion that you are not paying for. Thank you.

Volunteers Respond to Need!

We wish to thank the volunteers that have stepped forward to help with needs at the school: Mrs. Jean Dodero (1st grade), Mrs. Laura Kasica (office – Wednesday folders), “Mr. Paul” von Protz (K), Mrs. Wanda Collazo (2nd grade), Mrs. Dottie Silva (ink jet cartridges), and Mrs. Adrienne Pulley (Campbell Soup Labels). We appreciate your help – which benefits our students!

Report Cards

Report cards will be issued on Thursday, April 12 for grades K – 8. Please return the signed report card back to the school by Wednesday, April 25.

Final report cards will be sent home the last day of school, providing all accounts have been paid in full. Testing (SAT) scores will be mailed home in late June.

Stacking Club

The Stacking Club has finished for the current school year. They will start up again next year for those students who are interested in an afterschool club. We wish to thank Mrs. Nancy Durang for volunteering her time to work with the students after school in the stacking program.
