Black History Month at BCS

During the time period between Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and our February vacation, BCS has many activities to celebrate Black History Month.

Here’s what some of the classes are doing:

• Mrs. Thomas’s Junior High English classes will be working on a reading to present to our students on the wing about the history of Brown vs. Brown.

• Mrs. Fish’s 4th grade class is writing ABC biographies of famous African Americans. Check them out on the wall outside the 4th grade classroom!

• Mrs. Myette’s 1st grade class is reading African-American biographies throughout the month.

• Mrs. O’Regan’s Kindergarten class is making peanut butter and learning about George Washing Carver.

• Mrs. Lunsford taught the history of the song “Lift Ev’ry Voice” in music class last week.

• Mrs. Hodges used one of Martin Luther King’s sermons in chapel with grades 4 – 8, and the “Crayon Box” poem with PreK – 3.

If you have stories, songs, or activities that might be helpful in this celebration, please contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Hodges. Thank you!

A New Flag!

You may have noticed a new flag flying on our flagpole out front! It was donated to the church and school by Ken Hanson of Hanson Printing in memory of Cliff Carlson, who passed away last January.

It’s Cold Outside!

Please remind your child to wear a sweater to school during our colder days. You may choose either the cardigan or pullover V-neck uniform sweater for your child to wear. Harvey Uniforms now offers a polar fleece jacket that may be worn during class. White turtlenecks may also be worn under the sweater or polo shirts. Please note that other sweaters or jackets may not be worn in class. Sweaters or additional clothing may be ordered from Harvey Uniform at 1-800-462-8192.

When students go outside for recess, they should have gloves or mittens and a hat, along with a warm coat!

Students at Work outside of School!

We received notice that Joseph Leitao (5) just earned a junior black belt in Karate! Congratulations!

We also learned that Katerina Kasica (2) placed 2nd in a recent swim meet!

The Drum Major Instinct – Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major. Say that I was a drum major for justice. Say that I was a drum major for peace. Say that I was a drum major for righteousness. And all of the other shallow things will not matter. I won’t have any money to leave behind. I won’t have the fine and luxurious things in live to leave behind. But I just want to leave a committed life behind. And that’s all I want to say.…

If I can help somebody as I pass along,
If I can cheer somebody with a word or song,
If I can show somebody he is traveling wrong,
Then my living will not be in vain.
If I can do my duty as a Christian ought,
If I can bring salvation to a world once wrought,
If I can spread the message as the master taught,
Then my living will not be in vain.”

- Excerpted from “The Drum Major Instinct,” a sermon by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1968. You can read the sermon online at : http://www.stanford.edu/group/King/publications/sermons/

School Closing Announcements

School closing announcements will be made over radio stations WBET (AM1460) or WEZE (AM 590) and television channels 4, 5, and 7. In the event that Brockton Public Schools close, there will be no school at Brockton Christian.

Parking Lot Procedure

We have quite a few complaints about drivers in the parking lot. When dropping off your child in the morning, please pull into a parking spot if you plan to come into the school or if your child does not leave your car immediately. This will allow for uninterrupted flow for cars in the lot.

Please maintain the traffic flow in the afternoon, and do not exit the parking lot from the lower end. Thank you – as this helps in the safety of our parents as well as our students!

Women’s Safety Seminar

ABD (America’s Best Defense) Karate Studios, who sponsors our Karate classes at school, is holding a Women’s Self Defense Seminar on Friday, January 26, 2007, at 6:30 PM. ABD is located on Route 44 in Raynham, across from the Shaw’s Plaza and behind Rockland Savings Bank. You may call for further information at 508-828-9797. Mr. Ernest Thivierge, our karate instructor, will be conducting the class.
