NEW FREE AND REDUCED-PRICE LUNCH APPLICATIONS

August 29, 2007

Dear Parents,

Brockton Christian School will now be offering lunch on a daily basis as a satellite program of Brockton Public Schools.   Starting on September 10, our first day of school, we will offer a school lunch prepared off-site by Chartwell’s, the company contracted by  Brockton Public Schools to provide lunches for students city-wide.  The benefit of this program is the ability to offer lunches to all our students at a cost of $1.50 per student, per day.  Students may also qualify for free or reduced price meals, based on family income.  Students who qualify for reduced lunch will only pay $.40 per student, per day.

We will send home lunch slips on each Monday that will need to be returned by Wednesday of each week in order to provide lunch on the following week.  (Please note that this is a change from last year.)  In addition, since we will be reporting totals to Chartwell’s, we will not be able to accept lunch orders after Wednesday at 9:00 AM each week.  There can be no exceptions to this.

Brockton Public Schools has automated the meal application system to process applications quickly and efficiently.  Please fill out a family application completely and accurately.  If you know that you will not qualify for free or reduced lunch, please write your children’s name on the form and note N/A (not applicable) in the center of the form.

It is important that you submit the application, even if you don’t qualify for free or reduced price lunch. School meals are not the only services that may be impacted by these applications.  The applications are crucial in helping fund the school system and grants that Brockton Christian School participates in.  The following areas affect BCS:

  • Title I:  This funding helps to improve achievement in basic skills and core academic areas by increasing the amount and quality of learning time and emphasizing instruction by highly qualified professional staff.  It also provides students who have trouble mastering skills with special assistance.  BCS will be applying for this service if enough applications are completed by qualified families.
  • E-rate:  Districts receive a discount on technology and library purchases based on the date found in these applications.  A decline in free and reduced –price applications city-wide will result in fewer computers and books to help us fulfill our academic mission.
  • Grants from Foundations:  Foundation funding will give us the money to improve our school and is largely based on the number of students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals.

While some of this data affects Brockton Public Schools, it also affects BCS.  Our school nurse is provided by grant funding, and we have purchased textbooks and technology items with additional grant funding through Brockton Public Schools.

Families who fill out this application accurately and are approved for free or reduced price meals may also be eligible for assistance with fuel, food stamps, health insurance, food pantries, etc.  Once we have received and approved your application, we will send you a letter within 10 days that may be used in applying for these benefits.

These applications will be held in the strictest of confidence.  Thank you for your help in ensuring that all of Brockton’s students, along with those from BCS, have access to these programs.

Sincerely,

Karen I Hodges, Principal

Enclosures

PS – If you would like your child to have lunch the first week of school, please return the enclosed lunch slip and lunch money to the school office by Wednesday, September 5 at 2:30 PM.  Orders received after that time will not be accepted.  Please note that we cannot be responsible if you mail the form and we do not receive it in time.  We have to report the count to Chartwell’s on that day.  You may choose to drop the money and form off in our locked mailbox in front of the school.

An additional lunch form will be sent home on Monday, September 101, to be returned by Wednesday, September 12, for lunch to be served the following week, September 17-21.
