BCS Black History Month Celebration - 2006

Martin Luther King Day kicks off the celebration of Black History Month here at Brockton Christian School. We will be celebrating Black History Month from January 16 – February 17. Students have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:

Essay Contest:

Read one of the quotes for your age level. Write an essay that tells the meaning of the quote in your own words. Then, share an instance in your life when this quote was applicable, and how the quote relates to the lives of young people today. Up to five entries per classroom MAY be submitted to the National Foundations for Life essay contest.

Grades 3 – 5 – Essays should be under 500 words


• “When one helps another, both gain in strength.” – Ecuadorian proverb


• “You can really change the world if you care enough.” - Marian Wright Edelman, African American lawyer


• “Everyone has an opportunity to be great because everyone has an opportunity to serve.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.


• “When spider webs unite they can tie up a lion.” – Ethiopian proverb


• “An ant on the move does more than a dozing ox.” – Mexican proverb


• “The best advice is a good example.” – adapted from Ossie Davis, African-American actor


• “Never look down on people unless you’re helping them up.” – Jesse Jackson

Grades 6 – 8 – Essays should be under 1000 words


• “Whoever gossips to you will gossip about you.” - Spanish proverb


• “To ignore evil is to become an accomplice to it.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.


• “Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.” – Oprah Winfrey

Poster Contest (grades PreK - 2):

Design a poster on paper (at least 8 ½ x 11) that illustrates one of the quotes above. Have an adult write why you chose the quote and illustration.

 

All entries are due on Wednesday, February 15. Awards will be given out in chapel Wednesday, March 1. (after vacation)
