THE BCS EXPERIENCE

An education at BCS can be a good and rewarding experience for both parents and children. Several basic principles will contribute to this:

  1. All of us are seeking the best for your child. Your child will learn best if the parents and teacher are a team! This perspective helps to put problems your child may encounter and conferences we may have into a very positive framework.

  2. Talk to the teacher at the beginning of a problem. Don't wait until the problem is a month old. Handle little problems and they won't become big problems.

  3. Be positive and encouraging with your child's teacher. A word of praise from you will encourage a teacher’s heart.

  4. Help your child to follow school policies. Policies, such as the dress code, help the child to become aware of structure and rules in his life. These are meant to help train the child. A child who feels he is allowed to break these little rules will develop a similar attitude toward larger rules. Please be cooperative when a teacher asks your help in enforcing a school policy.

  5. When talking to a teacher, realize that children frequently tell only part of a story. Be willing to get the whole story before making a judgment.

  6. Admit that your child, like all children, could occasionally be the instigator of a problem.

  7. Help your child with homework and memorization. Check your child’s Agenda nightly to see that work is being completed thoroughly.

  8. Please do not hesitate to call the school office at any time if we can answer any questions for you. We will maintain an open door policy for both students and parents.

  9. Please pray daily for your child's teacher that he or she will have His wisdom in all classroom situations. In addition, the daily sharing of appropriate scriptures can help your child get off to a good start.

In working together we can help your child develop a Christian life philosophy that will prepare him for today and the future.

CHAIN OF COMMAND

Occasionally during the course of the year, misunderstandings or problems will arise between the teacher and a student, teacher and parents, parent and school, or one of several other possible areas. Such a misunderstanding often results from lack of communication between those involved.

Students must, at all times, conduct themselves in a manner become a Christian. Griping is not tolerated! If a student comes home complaining about a discipline policy, parents should follow this procedure:

  1. Give BCS the benefit of the doubt.

  2. Realize that your child's reporting is emotional, and may not contain all the relevant information.

  3. Realize that we have reasons for all rules, and that we enforce them without favor.

  4. Support the administration and call us for all the facts.

The administration has adopted a set policy for these situations, and complaints or problems will be handled in the way prescribed. (Matthew 18:15-17)

  1. All questions, problems, or complaints should be brought directly to the teacher first, before anyone else is involved.

  2. If the situation is not cleared up at this level through direct contact (and 95 percent are!), the problem should be brought to the principal.

  3. The principal, teacher, and parents should meet together to discuss a solution to the problem.

Finally, but only when all the above three (3) steps are taken in order and without satisfactory resolution, does the problem find its way to the school board through written appeal.  The address is: BCS School Board, Trinity Baptist Church, 1367 Main St., Brockton, MA  02301.

COMMUNICATION

Office Communication

Office communications will be sent home on Wednesdays. This includes the BCS newsletter (the BCS Connection), lunch order slips, and other school information. AfterCare bills and statements will also be sent on Wednesdays. Please check your child’s backpack daily to see if any messages have been sent home.

Appointments with Teachers

Please do not try to see teachers before or after school unless you have made an appointment to do so. A phone call the day before will help the teacher clear his or her time to see you.

Messages

If you need to get a message to your child regarding car pool drivers, changed appointments, etc., these messages will be delivered at 1:30 PM. Please call before this time to have a message delivered.

Notes Concerning Absences

All students are expected to abide by all state laws and school regulations regarding school attendance as well as other state laws and regulations regarding education.  Parents/guardians and students should make every effort to see that a student is present every day that school is in session.  Absences disrupt the continuity of instruction and education cannot be entirely regained, even by extra after school help.  Learning gained through interaction with peers and staff in class cannot be duplicated. Generally, absences can be excused for illness, death, or serious illness in the family, court dates, or for any other exceptional reason.

If your family is going away for an extended time, leaving school early or taking children out of school for appointments, please send an individual note to each of your children's teachers to facilitate communication.

Parent Conferences

Parent conferences are held each November for all students in grades 1 - 8. One or both parents/guardians should attend, as report cards will be given out and reviewed at the parent conference. Individual conferences may be made in the spring after the third report card, if desired by the parent or the teacher. Individual conferences may be arranged with the teacher whenever necessary.  Please make these appointments by calling the school office, or sending a note directly to your child's teacher.
